Parasitic Contamination of Soil, Irrigation Water and Rawly Consumed Vegetables in Farmlands of Asmara, Eritrea

Background: About one third of the world population are infected with intestinal parasites. Eating raw vegetables is customary in many parts including Eritrea posing a great risk for transmission pathogens. Therefore, aim this study was to determine prevalence and risks parasitic contamination vegetables, soil irrigation water samples. Methods materials: A cross-sectional carried out on different types 336 vegetable samples (lettuce, carrot, cabbage arugula), 60 each using sedimentation technique. Simultaneously, socio demographic farmer practice data farmers were collected structured questionnaire. The obtained entered analysed SPSS version 20. Result: magnitude vegetable, 144(42.9%), 21(35%) 30(50%) respectively. Lettuce most contaminated sample (51.2%) arugula (50.9%), carrot (42.7%) (34.1%). prevalent parasites detected S. stercolaris 30.6% followed by A. lumbricoides (11.8%) hookworm (11.8%). main findings also include statistically significant difference rate observed among various farmlands, types, practices. Also, association between source (p-value= 0.02) area collection (p-value< 0.001). Conclusion: This conclusively reveals high burden impact wastewater system as major factor parasitosis communities Asmara.
